About Us

“Landmarks” was created to recognise buildings, sites and locations of historic significance in Rangiora, and a Kaiapoi programme has since been established.

It is a partnership between the Waimakariri District Council, the Rangiora & Districts Early Records Society, and the Kaiapoi District Historical Society.

Under the programme, buildings, sites and locations that meet set criteria are presented with a plaque recognising heritage status.

The Early Records Society and the Landmarks Committee members research the history of nominated buildings on behalf of the programme.

So far, plaques have been presented in Rangiora to the:

• Courthouse
• Farmers building
• Johnston building
• Junction Hotel
• Masons building
• Museum
• Parrott's building
• Post Office
• Rangiora Town Hall
• St John the Baptist Anglican Church
• Turvey House
• Victoria Park Band Rotunda

And in Kaiapoi to:

• Bank of New Zealand
• Kaiapoi Band Rotunda
• Kaiapoi Courthouse (demolished due to the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010/2011)
• Rialto Theatre (demolished due to the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010/2011)
